Butte police are investigating the fatal highway shooting of an adult male, which is believed to be self-inflicted.

Butte-Silver Bow Police Captain Doug Conway says the shooting took place about one mile south of Nissler Junction in the northbound lanes of Interstate 15.

Butte police dispatch received a call from a Montana Highway Patrol trooper just after 4:30 p.m. requesting medical assistance, Conway said. The trooper reports he was in the process of making a traffic stop involving the driver of a pickup truck when the shooting took place. Conway says a preliminary investigation indicates the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

His name has not been released, but Conway says a Butte address is listed for the deceased man. Butte-Silver Bow Police, ambulance and Montana Highway Patrol responded to the incident.
