Saturday is Armed Forced Day, a time set aside to honor the volunteer men and women who serve to protect our country.
One way to support the troops and veterans right here at home is in the rebuilding of the American Legion on Main Street. The building was destroyed in the 2009 downtown explosion, but is under reconstruction.
To help pay for the new digs, the American Legion is holding a raffle. Tickets go on sale this weekend. They can be picked up for $5 each Saturday or Sunday downtown at ticket tables on Main Street.
Several prizes have been donated by local businesses and the raffle will be held on Memorial Day, May 31.
Commander Len Albright says the construction is moving along as planned.
"The roof is up and all the walls are up and the whole outside is done except for the front face. That's going to be worked on a little bit later. Now we're working on the inside doing plumbing and electrical and all the fancy stuff that's going on in there," Albright said.
This Memorial Day, the American Legion is also planning to hold a veteran's parade on Main Street for the first time since 1964.
That will be followed by a military memorial service at Sunset Hill's Cemetery.
